Josiah Ching

Angler. Guide. Conservationist.

Josiah was born and raised in Molokai, Hawaii, where he grew up in a fishing and hunting family before serving six years in the U.S. Army as a Scout, including a deployment to Iraq. After returning home, he followed in his father’s footsteps as a fly-fishing guide, eventually launching Bucks and Bones Outfitters in 2023, specializing in bonefish on the fly and rifle and archery axis hunts in partnership with Puʻu O Hōkū Ranch.

Guided by lessons in patience, strong work ethic, and gratitude, he has built a growing outfitting business rooted in conservation, family tradition, and a deep passion for the outdoors.

“I got into guiding the same way most local kids in Molokai do, through hunting and fishing, both for food and for fun. I grew up in a fishing family; my dad and grandfather were commercial fishermen. They worked in all kinds of fisheries, from deep-sea trips to bottom fishing and shoreline fishing.”

What’s your favorite species to hunt and fish for?

Favorite species for sure Axis and Bonefish. Archery axis is next level because they’re so skittish and wary all the time. Same for big bones, just smart and not easy to trick so when it all happens it’s magic every time.

What’s your bucket list destination to hunt and fish?

Bucket list for me are both things I haven’t been able to do yet being from Hawai’i. Hunt for me would probably be archery elk like it is for a lot of guys, duck or pheasant.

Fishing probably Permit or big Barramundi on fly. Permit because of all the wild things you hear about how weird they can be, and I’ve had a lot of guys tell me that our big bones out here are similar to Permit so I’d love to see how they compare. Barramundi because I’ve been blessed to have been able to fish Australia before and it was insane. Great people, good food, amazing culture and the eats from big Barramundi looks crazy.

Why is the Duck Camp brand special to you?

Duck Camp is special to me because they make a quality product and are doing a great job of building a solid community of like minded individuals. The fact that they support conservation and are constantly looking for other ways to do that is also important to me as it’s also a large part of my personal life.

What’s your favorite Game Series hat?

Favorite game series hat, will have to be the Bonefish for sure.

What’s your favorite piece of Duck Camp gear?

Single favorite piece of gear is going to be a hard one but I really love the 5” Scout shorts, brush pants, the tracker pants and the Airflow insulated hoodie has been something I’ve been using a lot for both on the boat and on hunts.
